This Gold 2 Escudo coin was minted during the height of Spanish conquest, and was among the various denominations of gold coins that were aboard the Spanish Treasure Fleet which sank off the coast of Florida in 1715 due to a hurricane. The fleet consisted of twelve ships, which were carrying a vast amount of treasure in the form of gold, silver, and precious gems. The discovery of these shipwrecks has also led to advancements in marine archaeology and preservation techniques.
