KM-377.8; DP-Go56. An opportunity to own a coin that is Seldom seen from this shipwreak. The USS Charleston, a protected cruiser, was launched in 1888 and commissioned in 1889. It served in the Pacific Squadron and the Asiatic Squadron, cruising in the eastern Pacific and the Far East. During the Spanish-American War, it was recommissioned in 1898 and played a significant role. It raised the American flag over Guam, joined Admiral Dewey's fleet in Manila Bay, and participated in the bombardment of Manila, leading to its surrender. The ship remained in the Philippines, aiding Army forces and capturing Subic Bay. Unfortunately, in November 1899, the USS Charleston grounded on an uncharted reef near Camiguin Island and was abandoned by its crew. They were later rescued by the USS Helena.
